Does heated space automatically count as square footage?

No, not automatically. Heat is one ingredient of finished area, not the test. Under ANSI Z765 a space must be finished (walls, floor, ceiling), above grade, 7 feet tall, and connected through finished space to count as gross living area. A heated garage, a heated three-season room, and a heated basement all fail at least one of those and stay out of GLA.
Where the "heated square footage" idea comes from
Some MLS systems and assessors use "heated square feet" as a shorthand for living area, and in older Southern practice it was common. It is a rough proxy, not a standard, and it overcounts anything heated that is not finished. Appraisals working to ANSI do not use it.
The reverse question
Can unheated space count? No. Suitable for year-round use means conditioned. A finished but unheated room is not finished area either. A heated sunroom and a heated garage are the two places this comes up most.
