House

A house is a building made for people to live in, usually by one household. In real estate the word most often means a single-family home rather than an apartment or condo unit.

Gross living area describes the house itself, not the land under it. Lot size is a separate figure on an appraisal, so a small house on a large lot and a large house on a small lot are compared on each measure separately.

Not every part of a house counts. The living area includes the finished rooms above ground, while the garage, basement, attic storage, and porches are reported on their own lines.
